I didnt see this thread before. I ran the last 3 Blackwater 100's on a bike, and it was truly an awesome event. By 1991 they would not allow 3wheelers to compete. Your report is great and accurate. The only thing I might add is that I do not believe it was the town of Davis that closed the doors on this event, but rather environmental extremists taking legal action over the "destruction of wetlands". Other than lining up for the start through the center of town, the actual race, and all the campers and spectators were on federal land, national forest land, if memory serves me right. The National Guard ran security on the federal land, and they were a super bunch of laid back guys who fit right into the atmosphere, however, as soon as you crossed the wooden bridge into Davis, you had to contend with the WV State Police, and they didnt have much of a sense of humor. The federal land was open to atv and dirt bike riding all year at the time, but the treehuggers managed to have all atv riding banned on this land, not just teh Blackwater 100.
Davis was a town of about 5,000 people, and this one race event brought somewhere between 40-50,000 people. The Davis economy desperately depended on this event which brought more money into that town during Blackwater week than the entire rest of the year! Agaian , going by memory, I believe the Blackwater 100 spanned 21 years.
This is me in 1991 on my 1980 Kaw KE175 shortly before my trip to MD in an ambulance. At least I got on the Mud Wars video!
