I just got a 250EX in the shop this week to replace the axle bearings. When I got it torn down, I found the differential was basically junk, the ring gear was worn pretty bad, the pinion was bouncing all over the place because of the bad bearings, and the diff cases were showing wear since the ring gear bearings were locking up and beginning to spin in the cases. I started pricing out the repair and was up to about $600 retail and still had alot more to go, and that wasn't even including the labor. It was beginning to look like this quad was headed to the scrap yard, or going to get parted out, until I took a better look at the Honda parts diagram. There I found the part number for the COMPLETE, assembled, just bolt it on and go, differential. The entire thing only retails for $233. Needless to say, I have one very relieved customer. So for all of you shaft-drive guys, if you're in need of a differential rebuild, be sure to check the price of a complete unit first. I can't say they'll all be this way, but it's well worth checking out. It could save you a bunch of cash.

This one wasn't maintained, doesn't look like the fluid was ever changed. In fact there was hardly any in it. Make sure to at least check the fluid every couple weeks and change it every six months or so.
