For those who have had a valve job done on your head, getting your valves shimmed properly can be very time consuming, since you are basically starting from scratch. I have found it much easier to do "dry" assembling, prior to installing the head. This is done by assembling the head on the work bench before you put it on the motor. Start with the shims that were on the valves prior to the valve job, torque your cam carrier and check your clearances, then adjust as needed. By doing it this way, you have more room to work, and less chance of dropping a shim in the motor. Please keep in mind that while this may get your shims perfect before you install the head, one more adjustment may be needed after the head is installed, since torqueing the cylinder head to spec may throw the adjustment off slightly.
