I preface my reply with the fact that I am not fast by any stretch of the imagination.
I have been running Maxxis IT's simply because they seem to wear well for me. I imagine that any good dirt knob, when fresh and new, would be the same for me at my C rider pace.

Yeah that's what I hear about s12 is they don't last.
I am currently running a michilin starcross ms3 up front and a starcross ms12 rear. The rear seems to do well but the front is a little sketcy.
I will look into the maxxis. And btw I am sloooooow also but I think a better front will give me a little more confidence in the open field sections.

harescrambled wrote: dj, I run the Maxxis MaxCross SI everywhere. those tires get good traction pretty much everywhere, and they last a good long time (I've done almost every race this season, and I've used one front and two rear tires up. I'm still using front #2, and I'll be running rear #3 this weekend). Even more important is that when they begin to wear, they don't lose all their traction right away. Every Dunlop I've ever used has been junk as soon as I broke the corners on the knobs. (Caveat....I've heard the Dunlop Geomax is much better about that). Best all around dirt tire in terms of outright performance...Michelin S12. When you're in muck, or you have the bike leaned way over and need to hammer on it, that tire just hooks up. It's a bit pricey though, and it doesn't last quite as long as the Maxxis when you get into harder terrain :(. The S12 makes the 500 (aka Big Nasty) almost hook up. Great tire though.
